What information is used in a BaZi compatibility reading?

A full compatibility analysis therefore begins with two individual charts. Ideally, each person provides:

Why each chart should be read separately first
Two people do not become compatible because one chart "fills" every element missing from the other. That shortcut treats each person as an incomplete ingredient list.
A reader first asks how each natal chart works:
- What is the Day Master?
- What seasonal environment does the Month Pillar establish?
- Which elements support, express, regulate, or drain the Day Master?
- Which patterns are prominent or under pressure?
- How are relationship themes already represented within that chart?

The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem in the Day Pillar and the reference point for the rest of the chart. Comparing two Day Masters shows one basic elemental and Yin-Yang relationship.
One may generate the other, control the other, share the same element, or be generated by the other. This can suggest a pattern of support, expression, regulation, or exchange within the traditional framework.
This is only the opening layer. A generating Day Master relationship does not make two people a good couple, just as a controlling relationship does not make them incompatible.
2. Day Pillars and Day Branches
The Day Pillar contains both the Day Master and the Earthly Branch beneath it. In relationship-oriented BaZi traditions, the Day Branch often receives particular attention because it is associated with close partnership context.
A comparison may look for combinations, clashes, harms, punishments, or other branch relationships involving the Day Pillars. These terms describe structural interactions. They should not be translated directly into "marriage" or "divorce."
A clash can show movement, difference, activation, or recurring negotiation. A combination can show attraction or cooperation, but it may also change how another part of the chart functions. Neither label decides the outcome alone.
3. Five Elements flow
Readers examine how Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water move within and between the charts.
One person may introduce an element that supports a pattern in the other chart. Another interaction may increase pressure or pull attention toward expression, responsibility, resources, or exchange.
Instead of asking, "Does this person give me my missing element?" ask what relationship that element has to the Day Master and the existing structure.
4. Relationship roles
The Five Elements form five broad relationships to each Day Master: Resource, Output, Wealth, Officer or Authority, and Companion. Because the reference point changes, each partner may experience the same interaction differently.
For example, one person may experience a dynamic as support while the other experiences it as responsibility. That asymmetry can be productive, tiring, or both depending on the real relationship.

5. Timing

A full BaZi chart contains four Earthly Branches and four Heavenly Stems. Comparing two year animals therefore looks at one visible layer from each chart, not the complete structure.

A hypothetical two-chart example
Imagine Person A has a Wood Day Master and Person B has a Water Day Master. In the generating cycle, Water supports Wood.
A quick compatibility post might conclude, "B always supports A, so this is an ideal match."
A fuller analysis asks more:
- Does Person B’s Water have support in their own chart?
- Does Person A already have abundant Wood support?
- What do the Day Branches do when compared?
- Does the interaction feel like welcome support, dependence, pressure, or an unequal expectation in real life?
- What timing cycles are active for each person?
If Person B is already carrying heavy demands, constantly being cast as the supporter may become exhausting. If Person A’s chart already has more support than it can use, additional Water may not solve the couple’s real issue.
The elemental relationship offers a hypothesis. The couple's experience may support it, complicate it, or contradict it.

What BaZi compatibility cannot decide
BaZi cannot identify one guaranteed soulmate, prove that someone is safe, predict divorce, or tell you to stay in or leave a relationship.
It should never be used to excuse harmful behavior. A favorable combination does not cancel dishonesty, coercion, violence, or repeated disrespect. An unfavorable-looking interaction does not make a caring relationship doomed.
