What is a BaZi Day Master?
The BaZi Day Master is the Heavenly Stem at the top of the Day pillar. It represents the chart's main reference point and combines one of the Five Elements with yin or yang. Its meaning depends on season, support, pressure, expression, and the full chart.
The Day Master is the top character of the Day pillar.
In the example chart, the outlined Day column contains 庚 above 辰. The top character, 庚 or Geng, is Yang Metal. That is the Day Master. The lower character belongs to the Day Branch and is not part of the Day Master label.
Every Day Master combines one of five elements with yin or yang, producing ten possible Heavenly Stem types.
Example structure only—not a personal reading.
Five elements, each expressed as yin or yang.
These metaphors help explain quality and direction. They are not complete personality profiles.
| Element | Yang expression | Yin expression |
|---|---|---|
| Wood | Jia 甲 · upright growth, structure, direction | Yi 乙 · adaptive growth, connection, refinement |
| Fire | Bing 丙 · radiance, visibility, broad warmth | Ding 丁 · focused light, attention, cultivation |
| Earth | Wu 戊 · mass, stability, containment | Ji 己 · fertile ground, care, development |
| Metal | Geng 庚 · force, cutting, decisive action | Xin 辛 · precision, value, polish |
| Water | Ren 壬 · movement, scale, open flow | Gui 癸 · subtle flow, sensitivity, absorption |
A Day Master never stands alone.
Calling someone “a Wood person” or “a Metal person” can be a useful first metaphor, but it leaves out the most important work. The same Day Master can behave very differently depending on season, support, expression, control, combinations, and timing.
A plant in spring, a plant in winter, a tree with water, and a tree under heavy metal pressure are not the same context. BaZi interpretation begins by asking what surrounds the Day Master and how those relationships operate.
